The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Germany has open positions for 11 fully funded PhD positions in Computational and experimental plant sciences for their 2024 PhD program. Their International Max Planck Research School on Understanding Complex Plant Traits using Computational and Evolutionary Approaches is a local collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research and the University of Cologne, Germany.
Basic molecular biological studies on plants are conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research. The experts in Cologne are working to enhance traditional breeding techniques and create crop protection plans that are favourable to the environment. Their primary research areas include plant evolution, development, genetic makeup, and environmental interactions.
Research Area
The International Max Planck Research School’s objectives are to investigate basic biological processes in plants and to produce information and resources that might support creative plant breeding. Over thirty research groups investigate the regulatory networks that govern basic features such as the development of reproductive organs, the shape and size of organs, innate immunity, and the impact of microbiomes on plant performance. They use and develop various multidisciplinary technologies in different plant species, including structural biochemistry, sophisticated imaging, genomics, genetics, and computer modelling.

Words from the Institute
We provide an excellent, international and interdisciplinary research environment with state-of-the-art facilities and a renowned faculty. Positions are fully funded for 3 years with possible extension. Salary is based upon the framework of a Max Planck Society doctoral funding contract (TVöD 13, 65%). We are committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in the workforce and encourage applications from such qualified individuals. Further, we seek to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourage women to apply.
