First Baby born from DNA of three people in UK

A baby with DNA of three people were born in UK by IVF. This was done with a technique called mitochondrial donation treatment (MDT), which uses the tissues from the egg of healthy females (donors) to create embryos using IVF. The major advantage of this technique is the lack of mutations in the embryo thus formed.

Thus the baby from the embryo contains the DNA from parents as well as small amount of genetic material from the donor

The embryo formed is a combination of real parents sperm and egg along with the mitochondria from the donor’s egg. Thus the baby from the embryo contains the DNA from parents as well as small amount of genetic material from the donor.

So it can be termed as three-parent baby.

Diseases due to mitochondrial malfunctioning is fatal. It can cause the death of the baby within hours to days of birth. The MDT technique can be complete remedy to resolve the problem.
