PhD Position in Microbial Ecology – University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany – 2024

A new PhD student in microbial ecology is required for the DFG-funded project “DeepH: Horizontal evolution of uncultivated archaea in the deep biosphere,” which is housed in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen and is part of the Environmental Metagenomics group led by Prof. Dr. Probst at the Research Centre One Health Ruhr of the University Alliance Ruhr. The multidisciplinary research will investigate how the organisation of the microbial genomes of archaea forms deep underground ecosystems worldwide. Genome-centric bioinformatics and genome-resolved metagenomics of long-read technologies will be employed. Additionally, you will participate in research trips to sample locations in the US, Japan, Germany, and Italy as well as single-molecule microscopy. The DeepH project will work closely with Ulrike Endesfelder’s team at the University of Bonn.

In terms of soft skills and career development, we envision you joining the University of Duisburg-Essen Water Graduate School, which will guarantee a tailored education for your needs and offer numerous chances for you to engage in seminars and workshops with peers and other scientists.

We especially urge foreign individuals to apply for this post as we aim to diversify our team of young and energetic microbiologists, virologists, and computational biologists.

Requirements

  1. M. Sc. or equivalent with a focus on microbiology, microbial ecology, geomicrobiology, genomics, bioinformatics or similar.
  2. Proficient knowledge in DNA extraction and (q)PCR is required.
  3. Bioinformatics skills are an advantage, particularly knowledge in genome-resolved metagenomics, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, and programming in shell, python, and/or R.
  4. Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  5. Experience in fieldwork is not expected but will be a plus; so is knowledge of fluorescence microscopy.
